Cellulose vs. Fiberglass

Do you really care how well your insulation works around 20 degrees Farenheit? At 20ºC, fiberglass is at its best, but as shown in the graph to the right, Fiberglass falls behind Cellulose insulation at every other temperature. Cellulose Insulation is the insulation that works well when you need it - through winter's cold and the summer's heat - not just at 20º.

Cellulose insulation and fiberglass insulation each have their pros and cons. When they are compared side by side, cellulose is shown to be the better choice. It's not better in every aspect, but it's better on more points than fiberglass.

• Cellulose insulates better than fiberglass. (Boston Globe)
• Cellulose insulation is made from mostly recycled materials
• Houses that catch fire burn more slowly with cellulose installed than with fiberglass
• Fiberglass is a suspected carcinogen and carries a hazard warning label. Cellulose and it's fire retardants are much more benign
• Fiberglass is easilly blown around by air currents
• Fiberglass settles much more than cellulose. So over time you actually get fewer inches of fiberglass than you paid for
• Cellulose settles but setteling is taken in account in applcation amounts

Blown in cellulose insulation is 2 to 3 times more dense than fiberglass insulation. Studies comparing blown in cellulose insulation vs fiberglass insulation show that cellulose insulation was 38% tighter, required 26% less energy, and produced a 24.5% reduction of air infiltration compared to that of fiberglass insulation.
